An Eye for an Eye

I caught this story and immediately thought to myself that ISLAM/Middle East would take a bashing for it so I decided to read the comments... and one stuck out...

they should take both his eyes and a arm... not punishing people is major cause of crime ..having a long history of problems with law when I was young. in my 20's and escaped punishment for crimes it was not till I recieved a long prison sentence That I realized had I needed punished .This forgive stuff is for birds! I and many others i talked to had same idea. These people who want to forgive especialily violent offenders only push problem down the road.Wake up do the crime do the time.

I totally agree that crime is spurred on by the lack of punishment.

We in Trinidad & Tobago have passed the 500 (known murders) mark and there seems no end. A Police service that is corrupt/corruptible, where officers like to use the phase "You eh know how I is? I is a Police!" I guess I am supposed to be intimidated by them but when Private Security Officers make the same threat, "I could arrest u, u know!" I realise its just Penis Envy.

Back to the post now... We need to ensure that people in society know that crime doesn't pay. We need to set examples. Bring back Capital Punishment. The Earth cannot sustain all of us so if some have to die so be it. But! We should have the right to live and not have it taken by force... except if that was our own action. Capital punishment for Capital offences. A Murderer should be Murdered. A Rapist should lose the tools required for Raping. And YES! Baseball rules... 3 Strikes and your out!

Mavado - Exonerated

MavadoJamaica's Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn QC, this morning signed a letter stating that the Crown is not continuing criminal proceedings against David Brooks AKA Mavado. The letter was presented to the Gun Court and the matter against him dismissed. Mavado has been de-processed and his fingerprint destroyed. Freed of all charges, Mavado is looking forward to continuing his positive rise in Jamaica and on the world stage.

“We said from day one that we have all faith in the Jamaican justice system that Mavado will be vindicated in this matter,” manager Julian Jones-Griffith said. “Give thanks to God for bringing a brighter day, and to the legal team of Tom Taveres-Finson and Antoinette Haughton. When Mavado’s US visa was cancelled it was on the grounds that he had an ongoing case before the courts. As this matter is now cleared up we will be approaching the US Embassy at the earliest opportunity to reapply for his work permit, once we have gathered all the necessary documentation from the courts etc.”

The charges arose out of an incident that took place in July of 2007. Statements were taken at that time and despite no new evidence emerging, Mavado was not arrested until March of 2008. He was charged with Illegal Possession of Firearm and Shooting with Intent but the Crown went on to decide that there was a lack of evidence against Mavado so they could not proceed with the trial and it collapsed in court.

Mavado is thankful this chapter is now closed and he can continue what he does best, making hits and connecting Jamaica.

Cyber Crime

cyber crime
I was checking out a Jamaican Press article and it said that there is no legislation for cyber crime (in Jamaica) and that the perps are getting away with a crime...

I wonder how many Trinbagonians are victims of these types of crime... how many are slandered in this manner... how many people may have lost their job because of it...

in this time where the Government Speaker of the House of Representatives is clamping down on the use of 'new technologies' what then are the MPs seeking to do about this problem?.. the Ministry of Education has set guidelines for the use of cellular phones and other electronic devices within school premises... but what is the 'punishment' for those that break the rule?.. and what about the degree to which it is broken?.. within the guidelines it is entirely up to the school to implement/enforce...

I shall search the Ministry of Legal Affairs site extensively for any pertinent information... their search box is a waste of time...

hey if found one reference to cyber-crime in the Draft Policy Paper - Consumer Protection in the 21st Century and eleven to the word internet...

Wild West Blood Bath

A turf war among drug cartels has claimed more than 210 lives in the first three months of this year. Many of those killed were young gunmen from out of town. The number of homicides this year is more than twice the total number of homicides for the same period last year.

That is the state of crime in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico... it was filed under the headline 'Mexico Drug War Causes Wild West Blood Bath' and written by James C. McKinley Jr.

<--sarcasm-->

So to all of you Trinbagonians... on behalf of the Minister of National Security I remind you that this is a Global problem...
LIVE WITH IT... or die...

<--/sarcasm-->

Guess who was speechifying in Mexico as well...

the Law is an Ass

Picture this...

Monday morning... you arrive at 8:30... Court 'starts' at 9:00... Shirt in pants, search yuh bag, Cell phone off, Metal Dector?, Empty Pockets for Hand Swipe... then onto the Court... that is supposed to start at 9:00...

Sit and wait... No Talking, No Chewing Gum... a list of NOs... Wait for the presiding Judge (who is paid enough to never call in sick or reach late)... but guess what... Judge late...

ALL RISE... get up show respect for the lady who walk in an hour late... sit quietly... call a case... a Child Custody matter at that... quickly informs both parties that this case will be adjourned until June... calls another case...

all parties are not ready... "I am here to represent the representer who isnt here yet..."... Judge realises that it have plenty cases and makes the statement that all the other cases will have to be adjourned to hear this one... ALL RISE... she exits...

wait a couple minutes more... ALL RISE... calls your case and the earliest available date is in May... your lawyer has another case on the same day... so June it is... you ask the lawyer... WTF? why wasnt the case heard?.. oh they have a Murder Trial...

spent about 2 hours at the Court and nothing happened but an adjournment... you realise one of the reasons why the LAW is an ASS

Now I question...

Child Custody and Murder in the same Court... overhead in the gallery "Trafficking Cases are in another Court"... Trafficking? Drug Trafficking or the Vehicular kind?.. I thought that we had separate courts for separate offences... I thought that they had a Family Court... why they fighting over children in the same Court with Murders and House-Breakers... I doh understand...

THE FESTIVAL???

sometimes I really don't think people have a real grasp...

HAVE YOU LOST A LOVED ONE RECENTLY TO AN ACT OF VIOLENCE?
ARE YOU FED UP OF THE BLOODSHED?
ARE YOU FED UP OF THE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION?
ARE YOU FED UP OF THE VIOLENCE?
DO YOU WANT TO ESCAPE?

THEN COME TO "I CYAH WAIT 3" THE FESTIVAL.

MAY 31ST WE LOOK TO THE EAST.

ARIMA VELADROME

that is an advert for a concert that I got thru Facebook... notice what is starts off with Losing a Loved One to 'An Act of Violence'

Have we become so numb...

What will there be at this festival... More Bloodshed... Death & Destruction... will I be subject to an Act of Violence? Will I be able to Escape...

So who is this ad supposed to appeal to... the Lady who had her Son killed by his Father, the other Lady who was witness to her Daughter getting Shot for no apparent reason (so says the Police)... the list can go on and on...

Judging from this Advert... I know for sure now that I want to Escape... Escape from the stupidity... Escape from (as Jumbie says) Monkey Island...

Also where is the VELADROME... illiterate guys (who incedentally host parties in a 'room' in Arima)...
the word is spelt V-E-L-O-D-R-O-M-E
for those who didn't know a Velodrome is an arena for track cycling... Spell 'friggin' check nah... steups... NUMB

oh yeah one last thing... what was with all of the CAPS... don't you know its impolite to be SHOUTING all the time...

Boy Kills Man

"I knew I had to kill him"
"I told God that I had stabbed him... I know he understands..."

The 12-year-old boy had finished his homework and was playing a video game when he heard his mother cry out. Rushing to her aid, he found her on the kitchen floor... click on it to read more...

I just had to manipulate the statements to sensationalize the story... I've grown accustomed to the way media creates sound bytes and well being an editor who sometimes has to rephrase speech i wondered how many more visits I would get...

Are the Crime Initiatives finally paying off?

Now I heard this break as a news story on Friday as I was returning to the Office from doing my banking which is another story... just know that First Citizens needs to hire more tellers... especially for month end...

suspended: Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday packs his briefcase as he prepares to leave the Parliament Chamber of the Red House, Port of Spain, on Friday. -Photos: MICHEAL BRUCEPM: We won't save Panday
Ria Taitt Political Editor
Sunday, March 30th 2008

Government is not prepared to encourage the importing of lawlessness into the Parliament, through the Leader of the Opposition, Prime Minister Patrick Manning said yesterday. And therefore his Government will not validate Basdeo Panday's behaviour last Friday by initiating or supporting a resolution overturning his suspension from the Parliament, the Prime Minister added. Manning said the lawlessness manifested itself in Panday's refusal to accept the authority of the Speaker.

The Prime Minister was responding to a question from the Sunday Express yesterday, on whether his Government planned to use its majority to bring a motion to end the suspension and "save the Opposition Leader".

Panday has been banned from the Parliament and its precincts for the rest of this parliamentary session, which runs until December. Panday was originally suspended under Standing Order 43 (3), for the remainder of the sitting, for defying the Speaker's orders not to use a laptop. But his refusal to leave the Parliament after this suspension, triggered a second suspension (under Standing Order 43 (10)), which extends for the remainder of the parliamentary session.

Noting that the Speaker transcends politics and is the symbol of authority in the House, Manning said Government supported the Speaker's attempt to prevent lawlessness from entering the Parliament and becoming a feature of parliamentary procedure. "The Speaker was entirely correct," the Prime Minister stated.

But yesterday as the reality of the suspension sank in, Panday was still unrepentant. "Why do you worry about what the Speaker says?" he asked the Sunday Express, when the issue of the duration of the suspension was raised.

"Why do you worry about that? Everybody knows why he (Speaker Barry Sinanan) is doing this. It has nothing to do with computers. He is trying to establish a regime in which we shall not be able to speak unless we have his permission. And it is our duty to ensure that he doesn't breach that fundamental democratic principle of being able to speak," Panday said.

Asked whether he would be prepared to accept the rescinding of the suspension by a Government majority in the House or whether he would take the same position he took when his seat was vacated in October 2006, Panday said he would accept a Government resolution terminating the suspension.

He said, however, that whatever happened, he was determined to go to the Parliament next week. "I was elected to represent the people and I am going to do that, at the cost of my life, if necessary," he said.

This, despite the fact that he has been banned from the Parliament and its precincts until the session ends? "But I must go! The people elected me for that purpose. And if it means, going to prison, then I'll go to prison," an adamant Panday stated.

Asked whether every UNC MP still planned to go to Parliament with their laptops next week, Panday retreated from his position taken on Friday that all 15 UNC MPs would defy the Speaker at the next sitting, saying: "I don't know what they will do. But I'll be there."

Parliamentary sources said yesterday that it was not clear whether Panday would be paid or not. Standing Order 43 (13) states: "Any remuneration or allowance to which a Member is entitled as a Member of the House of Representatives shall cease in respect of the period of his suspension."

However, Panday, who is the Couva North MP, is paid as Leader of the Opposition, which is a constitutional position. That position, based on an instrument of appointment by the President, has not been revoked and should not be affected by his suspension. And he is still fulfilling his duties as Opposition Leader, sources pointed out.

It is therefore likely that he will continue to receive his salary of $23,000 a month, plus travelling ($2,500), housing allowance ($5,000), and other perks. His constituency allowances would continue, since it is now accepted policy that unless the seat is vacated or the member expelled, constituency allowances will not be stopped.

Now I hope after they suspend MPs they start stripping the illegal tint from all Government vehicles... Stop and charge all those who use the PBR in Govt. vehicles... and all the like...

Joseph: Crime a major problem

the following is an article from the Trinidad Guardian (Friday, September 28, 2007). The article, written by Yvonne Webb, was buried on page 24.

Joseph: Crime a major problem
National Security Minister Martin Joseph has acknowledged that the most serious challenge facing T&T is crime and violence.
He said it was the Government's main priority and measures were being put in place to treat with this issue.
He was speaking at a PNM political meeting in Fyzabad on Monday.
Joseph also cited a United Nations and World Bank report done in March to say that crime was a problem in the Caribbean.
He said:"The PNM did not need a document to tell us that. We knew that and the Prime Minister and Head of the National Security Council recognised that the first thing the Government had to do was to reduce the inflow of drugs and guns coming into the country."
The Government purchased three offshore vessels to partol the coastline, installed a 360 degree radar system and strengthened existing legislation.
He said:"There is an impression being given by those opposed to them that the PNM has failed to provide the country with the level of security and safety necessary.
"They have given you the impression that under the PNM we sat back and allowed crime and violence to escalate.
"They believe they could use that as an issue to remove us from government. We are going to show them that this is not the case.
"This election is not going to be a one election issue election," Joseph said.
He said while Government was not totally satisfied with the speed at which the reduction in crime was happening, law enforcement officers had noted changes and a reduction in major crimes such as murders and kidnapping.

now here are my reactions as i read the article...

National Security Minister Martin Joseph, left, and Police Commissioner Trevor Paul share a light moment with US professor Stephen Mastrofski during a press conference at the Ministry of National Security, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. Mastrofski unveiled a plan aimed at transforming the T&T Police Service.Joseph: Crime a major problem (finally an admission)
National Security Minister Martin Joseph has acknowledged that the most serious challenge facing T&T is crime and violence. (Nah he lie.. i tort there were no challenges)
He said it was the Government's main priority and measures were being put in place to treat with this issue. (how long now the population clamouring for some action?)
He was speaking at a PNM political meeting in Fyzabad on Monday. (to SHEEP or LEMMINGS?)
Joseph also cited a United Nations and World Bank report done in March to say that crime was a problem in the Caribbean. (AH, what would we do if the international community didn't alert us?)
He said:"The PNM did not need a document to tell us that. We knew that and the Prime Minister and Head of the National Security Council recognised that the first thing the Government had to do was to reduce the inflow of drugs and guns coming into the country." (well if you didn't need a document why quote one? and isn't the PM also the Head of the NS Council??)
The Government purchased three offshore vessels to partol the coastline, installed a 360 degree radar system and strengthened existing legislation. (but are these things operational/being utilised/enforced?)
He said:"There is an impression being given by those opposed to them that the PNM has failed to provide the country with the level of security and safety necessary. (ok is not the PNM fault its the Police... you are correct :P)
"They have given you the impression that under the PNM we sat back and allowed crime and violence to escalate. (thats no impression, that's reality!)
"They believe they could use that as an issue to remove us from government. We are going to show them that this is not the case. (well show me what is)
"This election is not going to be a one election issue election," Joseph said. (DAMN STR8, there are alot more issues to go along with crime... corruption, health, corruption, housing, corruption... did I mention corruption?)
He said while Government was not totally satisfied with the speed at which the reduction in crime was happening, law enforcement officers had noted changes and a reduction in major crimes such as murders and kidnapping. (This (fill in the blank) still talking about murders and kidnapping... I worried about them stealing my car, breaking into my home, robbing my family when they walking on the road, raping people... all crime should be considered MAJOR)

Jah Cure scheduled for July 2007 release

Jah Cure scheduled for July release by Karyl Walker, Sunday, March 11, 2007

Barring any breaches of prison rules over the next four months, Jah Cure and his many fans will get what they have longed for, the reggae singer's release. Jah Cure could perform at Reggae Sunsplash.

Major Richard Reese, who heads the Correctional Services Department, said on Friday that the singer is due to see the inside of a cell at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston for the last time in July.

"If he doesn't commit any institutional breaches he will be released," Reese told the Sunday Observer. Jah Cure, whose real name is Sycatore Alcock, was found guilty of robbery, rape and illegal possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 1998. He served the first part of his sentence at the St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre, but was transferred to the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre after he was held with what prison officials described as 'contraband'.

Word on the street was that Jah Cure was found in possession of recording equipment and illicit drugs during a search of his cell. Jah Cure also had an appeal against his conviction turned down and was denied parole on two previous occasions.

During the trial, the court was told that the singer and an accomplice held up two women and two men at gunpoint. The police said Alcock and an accomplice chased the men away before robbing and raping the two women on a dirt track in Montego Bay. Jah Cure was eventually arrested and convicted but his accomplice, who it is alleged raped the other woman in a pile of gravel, has never been brought to justice.

It is widely believed in law enforcement circles that the other man was subsequently shot and killed by gunmen. If Alcock is released in late July, he could perform on Reggae Sunsplash in early August. However, a source close to the singer said Jah Cure was planning on organising a major concert to celebrate his freedom.

A stream of singles over the last three years has worked wonders for Jah Cure's popularity, therefore, his re-entry into the entertainment scene should be warmly welcomed by his legion of fans.
Alcock joins a list of entertainers who have spent time behind bars.

Among them are:

  • Living reggae legend Bunny Wailer, who was sentenced to 14 months for possession of marijuana in 1967. He was found guilty after a police officer testified that Wailer stashed a bag with ganja in a barrel.
  • Two years earlier, Toots Hibbert was sentenced for the same offences. Ska trombonist Don Drummond was found guilty of murdering his wife in 1964 and was interned at the Bellevue Hospital in Kingston where he died five years later. His death has officially been listed as suicide.
  • Crooner Gregory Isaacs has spent time behind bars,
  • while dancehall artiste Alozade was sentenced after he assaulted a cop inside the Half-Way-Tree court.
  • The once popular deejay Zebra is now serving time on sexual offence charges.

Music to fight crime

The National Anti-Crime Music Campaign (Trinidad & Tobago) on the Praise Circuit intends to use music to fight crime. This new campaign to fight crime in the country was launched Saturday on Brian Lara Promenade in Port-of-Spain. “Music and lyrics combined is recognized as powerful tools of social re-ordering in developed countries,” explained Rachael Guzman De Vlugt, one of the main organizers of the campaign. The campaign continues in San Fernando on March 31st and will then visit seven other places including Chaguanas and Point Fortin. Performing at the function were Rev Angela Williams and Band, Rizon, Koen Duncan and his band, Isaac Blackman, Delamo and JD Sellier and Altar Call. De Vlugt said various other artistes would be provided by the Copyright Organization of T&T at the other venues. She also said anyone with positive lyrics in a song could join the campaign.
