No Confidence

Today the UNC-A has a Motion of No Confidence in the Prime Minister before the Parliament. Tune into the Parialament Channel to view the proceedings. With both sides promising to make lengthy presentations it seems headed to a late night affair.

There has also been controversy brewing about the assembly of 'supporters' in Woodford Square. Listening to the Power Breakfast Morning Show on Power102FM yesterday they called and spoke to Mr. Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj (UNC-A) and Minister of Information Mr. Neil Parsanlal.

Ramesh asserted that he had statements from three URP/CEPEP workers who said that they were being bussed into Port-of-Spain for the event and would be given RED jerseys to wear, in support of Prime Minister Patrick Manning. They also claimed that they will only be able to sign the attendance register, for processing payment, when they are on the bus heading to Woodford Square. Now this has been said about many of the present Government's Public Forums/Assemblies. That they 'use' the people who are within these Social Programmes and 'force' them to 'support' for fear of victimisation.

I will be tuned in to hear some of the presentations but wont be surprised if the motion fails. Mr. Maharaj has already said that he doesn't really expect the motion to pass but hopes that the revelation of certain FACTS will actually lead to the fall of the present PNM Government within six months. Judging from the response of the 'Day of Reflection' on Monday I don't believe we as a people are ready to stand up to those who we have put in control. Even though many of us aren't 'forced' like the URP/CEPEP to 'support' it seems as if we are just as scared.

Soca Power in T &T Captured in New Film

The power of soca takes centre stage in a new film set to premiere in Trinidad on June 11 in Movie Towne. Soca Power in Trinidad and Tobago follows four of the genre's most influential local talents throughout one Carnival season, moving from behind the scenes at large concerts to the heat and heart of Carnival: the streets, where mas unfolds and passions reach their pinnacle.

The film's main characters are Machel Montano, considered the most powerful man in soca; Bunji Garlin, revered, even feared, for his biting lyrics and bold, outspoken personality; Fay-Ann Lyons, soca royalty and one of the genre's brightest young stars; and Isaac Blackman, son of soca's creator Ras Shorty I.

Through the interwoven portraits of these four stars, Soca Power is an energetic immersion into the world of soca. "From the beginning of the film to the very end, it keeps you interested, especially with the way everybody's story unfolds," said Blackman, one of the leading voices of Jamoo music, known as the gospel of soca. "It shows the wide diversity of our culture, and is as real as it can get in every dimension. I think it's excellent and I'm very proud to be a part of it."

Jean Michel Gibert of Maturity Music (West Indies) Limited, one of the film’s producers, agreed, saying, "The power of soca is a reflection on the Trinidadian society; the sensuality, the passions, the release, the paroxysm of our cultural celebration on one side and the spiritual, more conscious, some times even more conservative attitude. The film is an excellent illustration of this double psyche," he explained.

Maturity Music co-produced Soca Power in T&T with ADN Production Paris and Trace TV, with the support of French National Cinema, the T&T Film Company and the European Union. Claude Santiago, who is well known for his treatment of music-related features, directed the film, which was filmed and produced using the latest audio-visual technology. It was filmed using real High Definition technology and boasts Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

Soca Power in T&T is part of a six-part series of films called Musique Creole, which is based in the Caribbean. The music of T&T is featured alongside that of Guyana, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique and Puerto Rico. The film has already met with rave reviews. It first premiered in April at Canal+ Studio in Paris, where it was well received. It will also be released in Barbados, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Jamaica and Martinique; and broadcast on French television and on Trace TV, which airs in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

and the winner is...

Selector D by 10+ points over second place and 30+ over third...

yeah well most of the people who say they was coming never showed up... and they missed out...

who was telling me that Selector D was mess and didn't even realise that DJ Kal had started his set... mmm... no name calling today, he know who he be... I guess some really see things differently and use different words in different ways...

apparently the fourth contestant had Passport problems. i thought with this whole Caricom Single Market you cudda travel with just a valid piece of ID. I probably misinformed or the person probably didn't have that either.

Aight, aight... things got started around 2100 an hour later than originally planned. I believe it was because of the poor turn-out.

Selector D was first up and showed me what I had been waiting weeks to see. He really has a trick that I haven't yet seen in the Caribbean. Lemme just say that the mixer ends up on the floor after he uses his belly and back to move the crossfader. The mixer isnt the only thing that is on the floor for the performance. He also does a Hula-Hoop with the mixer during his 10 minute set.

After his performance DJ Kal, representing St. Vincent, came on. The remark from someone I was having a conversation with was, "Wait nah the second man playing already?" ok ok I paraphrase buh da was d jist... his intro left much to be desired and was a lackluster performance. Sorry to say I didn't pay him much attention and I was gearing u for the final contestant from Grenada.

Slick, Dj Slick d man had argument, style, flair... he most definitely had what it took to come out on top but I guess after seeing Selector D the judges definitely had a task ahead of them. Slick even put on a mask and wooed the crowd with Road March tunes like Jumbie. He most definitely would have won if Selector D wasn't there... and the point total would have been closer if he and DJ Kal performed before Selector D.

DJ performances over it was time for the tally to begin and the LOCAL vocal talent to shine through...

King David and Prestan had a great 'message based' performance. Singing a few of his current hits King David really impressed me yet again with his delivery. Prestan is a great compliment to King David's style and they work well together.

Chromatics made plenty people think with some lyrics... "I'm your Puppet"... that's all I have to say...

Spotrushaz showed why they are Trinidad & Tobago's premiere Hip-Hop ensemble. sang a nice set. Had a nice piece of window dressing on the stage... performance suffered when Meet Sauce came on... I have the studio track and it sounds good but Sauce needs to work on performing LIVE and I hope that the voice he has is truly natural... cause if not he nah mek sense... it sounds copycat-ish...

Imij & Co. performed good. As usual nice tight set but I questioned some of the song selection though. I do hope though that if they gonna continue with Teri Lyons dance routine they ask her too get a pants that fits... I like seeing woman ass an ting but not like that... I was reminded of her sister Faye-Ann's performance @ Soca Monarch a couple of years ago... too much crack... it was the first time I have ever seen/heard them perform without Ghetto Flex as well. I missed him...

The Heineken part of the night then came to a close with the announcement of the results. Two were chosen to go to Jamaica for the Caribbean Finals. Yes they called DJ Slick name first but that didn't mean that he won. I saw the scores. Selector D had the nod from all of the judges, even getting a couple of perfect scores in certain categories from different judges.

Ah have to say it

My weekend and birthday was spoiled by the news on CNN about four idiots who decide to put their countries on the world scene in the most negative of lights. Now, this has nothing to do with religion because I have very close and important friends of that faith and have total respect for it. This is about people who took leave of their senses. Defreitas sound like a madman. When he used to work at JFK he used to think bout doin all kinna foolishness, so he loco from 19 o-long. If he had such a problem with America why he didn't give up his citizenship and go back to Guyana?

The sayin is that you could find a Trini in the mix no matter where you go, but this is one time you wanted that to so not be true.

Maybe all a dem fall on dey head plenty when they were small. Or maybe it is one big conspiracy by the babylon system.

The bottom line is that regardless of the reason it happen, the damage has been irrepairably done. Now it could be nigh impossible for somebody to get a visa to come up. It was done at the point where you had to swallow yuh pride an take all kinna abuse and spend yuh hard earned non refundable money in order for some peon in the embassy with an unnecessary attitude to blank yuh for no valid reason except that yuh save up enough vacation time an feel to go somewhere other than Maracas durin yuh time off. An we eh even goin to talk bout those who already up here an tryin to get a foothold in the system because the gov't back home have a limited mindset and vision when it comes to industry, people and development which is why the crime rate so high and would not drop till the old people who cut all kinna deal an bobol get move out and some new blood and ideas come in. Nah, we eh go talk bout dat.

Ah couldna cry or get vex. All ah coulda do was laugh. And pray.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind!

I've listened, watched, listened and watched some more, I was entertained, disturbed and disgusted.

I've kept quiet on certain recent local and international issues, except in my close circle of peeps, so I am making my final direct comments about them... yeah... sure... right.

It is just so funny to see how people always seem to have a plaster for every sore. We are a big bunch of HYPO-CRITICS.

We don't take enough responsibility when we should as its easy to pass blame onto others... even easier to spin our own troubles into reasons why you should heed our calls (the pastors know what I talking bout).

We cavort and hide in dark corners, behind closed doors and assume that others don't know what we are doing. They know what we are doing because they sometimes do the same.

These scenarios have really made me wonder... What can I really do to protect my family (child, spouse, brother, sister, parents) in a society that doesn't have the same moral values about life as we do? Who am I fooling, even among ourselves, as a family, we don't have the same values.

Do I throw away the TEL-LIE-VISION because the broadcast or cable providers are one and the same. Broadcasting a set of nonsense called entertainment... I guess they wouldn't show it if people didn't watch it... and we do like to watch... we always want to know what others have and what others doing. We want to keep up with the Jones'... whoever they be.

Do I continue to read the newspapers with so called journalists who quote from Wikipedia as if it is the Holy Grail of information. It isn't. Its content is created by us, the users. I can write/edit any article and put false information there that would have you believe that we live on a planet called Earth that was colonized by the Goa'uld and that Inter-Steller and Time Travel exist.

Back to topic...

To the young person who went for ice cream and ended up in a situation that can only be described as unmentionable (cause that is my stance)... you are clearly lacking proper GUiDANCE. I am not saying that your parents don't/didn't do enough but as a society we want to hold someone accountable; A Con-man, a Johnny "Have You Come to my Club Lately", a normally Mobile sponsor, a Pastor of all people, a Brother; who was calling for DVD vendors to be removed from selling on the streets because they were had pornographic material available; not because they were simply illegal, and even you... YES YOU!

Its sad to say that we all have a part to play in what happened. How many times have we ignored situations that endangered others, simply because it didn't seem to affect us. It affects us indirectly at first and then sometimes we are unfortunate enough for it to hit home.

A colleague in my office often remarks that only when it affects him directly would he then raise his voice on an issue.

Why be so selfish in life when others who are not as high on the totem pole need assistance? Why no help when a problem first arises? Are we really so selfish?


We as a society have alot more problems facing us and by continually pulling the wool over our own eyes we aren't helping/solving any of the problems.

Enough of the email fwds with the pics and the vids and lets clean up our own acts...

We have a Smelter to build, Roads to pave, Schools to open, Water to promise, People to displace...
